A Canadian-designed vertical farm is now feeding Ukrainian refugees in rural Moldova—thanks to a collaboration between Toronto-based Just Vertical and humanitarian group GlobalMedic.
Built in just 8 months in a Soviet-era barn, the hydroponic farm is producing over 350 lbs of culturally relevant food every month for Ukrainian refugees and local families facing food insecurity. It’s also the subject of “Moldova Feeds”, an award-winning short documentary just recognized at the 2025 Niagara Canada International Film Festival (Best Short Documentary – Advertising).
This is one of the first times Canadian farming technology has been deployed for humanitarian relief in Eastern Europe—and it’s changing how food aid can be delivered in conflict zones.
